Kids are notoriously hard to please when it comes to food, and getting them to try new foods can be challenging. So when planning your menu for your camping trip try to pick foods that you have all the time at home that you can cook at a campsite. If you have a two burner stove, you can make just about any dish that you make at home, although there are some foods that are traditionally associated with camping that can be fun to make for the family.

Try making some of these camping classics with your kids to make your family camping trip more fun:

Trail mix – No camping trip would be complete with this staple snack.  Trail mix can be bought in a prepared form in bulk at most natural foods stores or health food stores or you can make your own. To make your own mix your favorite nuts, pretzels, dried fruit and dried cereal in a big container and shake it.  Make a lot of it because this snack is perfect for camping and everyone will be munching it.

S’mores – You have to make s’mores on a family camping trip.  Chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers are all you need. You can use regular milk chocolate or add your favorite variation. Dark chocolate, low fat chocolate, sugar free chocolate, there are endless possibilities. Making these treats with your kids will be something you and they will always remember.

Toasted marshmallows – Bring lots of marshmallows because you will need them for s’mores and you will need them for toasting and roasting.  No family camping trip would be complete without a few evenings spent around a roaring campfire toasting marshmallows.

Foil packs – Foil packs are great for camping because they are easy to make, easy to clean up, and they are something that most people only make on camping trips.  To make a foil pack just put all the items you want to make in your meal in one large sheet of foil, cover it with more foil and stick it in the coals and let it cook.  Foil packs are great for cooking potatoes and vegetables.

Toast on a stick – Let the kids make their own breakfast over a campfire by placing pieces of bread on skewers and holding it over a fire until it’s perfectly toasted.  Chances are good that your kids will be enthralled, even if it takes a few tries to get the bread toasted just right.

These are just a few classic camping meals that most people enjoy. You can make your own traditions by coming up with your own family camping recipes that you and your kids can make while you’re camping.

Creating a tradition of making certain foods on family camping trips is something that your kids will always remember and will pass on to their kids too.
